You may not realize it, but the coffee you drink can impact bird populations. Drinking shade-grown coffee helps to preserve the forest canopy that more than 42 species of North American migratory songbirds depend on to survive their winter in the tropics. Tradition has been that coffee growers cut down everything to make room for coffee crops wiping out the habitat of not just the native birds, but the ones that spend the winter in the tropical rainforests. Coffee plants grow in the shade! The responsible farmers who are saving native plants are also helping habitat by conserving water and leaving the plant life that will convert oxygen into carbon dioxide. The Smithsonian has strict regulations to certify these coffee growers. You can find out more on their website.
