Hummingbird Nectar Recipe
Use regular white table sugar* in a simple ratio of one part sugar to four parts water
Example:1 Cup Sugar to 4 Cups Water or 1/4 Cup sugar to 1 Cup Water
You can make nectar for several refills and refrigerate the unused portion for later.
*Use only plain granulated cane sugar.
- Do not use honey, raw sugar, organic sugar, golden sugar, confectionery sugar or other than simple table sugar.
- Do not use any food coloring, preservatives, flavorings, or sugar substitutes. These additives could be harmful to the birds.
- Do not try to make it extra sweet since the birds need the liquid part of the nectar as well as the sugar part.
Hummingbird Nectar does spoil so clean the feeder and refresh the nectar every two days.
- More often -everyday- in the heat of summer.
- Clean hummingbird feeders are much more attractive to birds than ones with spoiled nectar.
- Recently, wildlife rehabilitators have made people aware of a mold that can grow in and on the surface of neglected nectar feeders which can cause severe consequences to hummingbirds.
Hummingbird Nectar from our store
We sell several hummingbird and oriole nectars called NectarFresh and a liquid concentrate, WBU NectarPlus. These products contain a micronutrient of copper (not a preservative) that keeps the nectar fresher, longer. The copper micronutrient is no more than what a hummingbird would eat it in its natural diet of insects. These items can be very helpful if you are pressed for time in maintaining the nectar. It will regularly last up to two weeks without spoiling. Ask one of our associates about these products
Other tips to attract Hummingbirds
Hummingbirds also eat protein!
Hummingbirds consume tiny insects which they catch in mid-air. This is not something that you can easily supply but, do note, that the use of insecticides in your yard will have a negative impact on hummingbird food sources.
Plant flowers in your yard in garden beds, hanging pots and container gardens

Choosing your Hummingbird feeders A few tips:
-
Visit the store to see the full selection and ask all about them.
-
Pick one that is easy to clean and doesn't drip
-
Keep out the ants because they are attracted to the sugar water and will make it spoil
-
Keep the bees from taking over the feeder
-
Bigger isn't always better- multiple small feeders tend to get more birds than one large one.
